And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written.
What Is a Miracle?
A miracle is something amazing that only God can do — something that is completely impossible for people. Miracles break the normal rules of how the world works. People can't walk on water, make blind people see, or calm a raging storm with words. But Jesus could do all of these things and more!
When Jesus lived on earth, He did many, many miracles. The Bible records about 37 specific ones, but John tells us that Jesus did so many more that all the books in the world couldn't contain them all (John 21:25). That's a LOT of miracles!
Jesus did miracles because He loved people and wanted to help them. But His miracles also proved something very important — that He truly is the Son of God, with the power of God.
Jesus Heals the Sick
Some of Jesus' most beautiful miracles were healing people who were sick or hurting. Everywhere He went, people brought their sick friends and family members to Him, and He healed them all.
Blind Bartimaeus: A blind man named Bartimaeus sat by the road and heard that Jesus was coming. He shouted, "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me!" People told him to be quiet, but he shouted even louder. Jesus stopped, called him over, and asked, "What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?" Bartimaeus said, "Lord, that I might receive my sight." And Jesus healed him instantly! (Mark 10:46-52)
The Paralyzed Man: A man who couldn't walk had four amazing friends. They carried him on a mat to the house where Jesus was teaching, but it was so crowded they couldn't get in. So they climbed onto the roof, made a hole, and lowered their friend down right in front of Jesus! Jesus saw their faith, forgave the man's sins, and told him, "Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way." And the man got up and walked! (Mark 2:1-12)
Jairus' Daughter: A man named Jairus came to Jesus crying because his little daughter was dying. Before Jesus could get there, people came and said the girl had already died. But Jesus said, "Be not afraid, only believe" (Mark 5:36). He went to the girl, took her hand, and said, "Little girl, I say unto thee, arise." And she got up, alive and well! (Mark 5:22-43)
Jesus Controls Nature
Jesus didn't just heal people — He also showed His power over nature itself. Storms, water, food — everything obeyed Him! Here are some of the most amazing nature miracles:
Calming the Storm: Jesus and His disciples were in a boat when a terrible storm hit. The waves were crashing over the sides, and the disciples were terrified. But Jesus was asleep! They woke Him up shouting, "Master, carest thou not that we perish?" Jesus stood up, looked at the wind and waves, and simply said, "Peace, be still" — and everything became perfectly calm! The disciples were amazed: "What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" (Mark 4:35-41)
Walking on Water: One night, the disciples were in a boat on the sea and Jesus was on the shore. He walked right out to them — on top of the water! Peter said, "Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water." Jesus said, "Come." Peter stepped out of the boat and actually walked on water too — until he looked at the waves and got scared and started to sink. Jesus caught him and said, "O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" (Matthew 14:22-33)
Water Into Wine: At a wedding in Cana, the hosts ran out of wine. Jesus' mother Mary told the servants, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it." Jesus told them to fill six large jars with water, and when they poured it out — it had become the finest wine! This was Jesus' very first miracle (John 2:1-11).
Jesus Shows His Power Over Everything
One of the most amazing miracles is when Jesus raised His friend Lazarus from the dead. Lazarus had been dead for four days. Jesus stood at the tomb and cried — showing that He truly loved His friend. Then He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!" And Lazarus walked out, alive! (John 11:1-44)
Jesus' miracles show us that He has power over absolutely everything — sickness, nature, and even death. Nothing is too hard for Him! And the greatest miracle of all? When Jesus Himself rose from the dead on Easter morning. That miracle changes everything for everyone who believes in Him.
Why Jesus Did Miracles
Jesus didn't do miracles just to show off or impress people. Every miracle had a purpose:
To show God's love: Every healing, every rescue, every act of power came from Jesus' deep love for people. He "was moved with compassion" (Matthew 14:14) — His heart hurt for people who were hurting.
To prove He is the Son of God: The miracles showed that Jesus wasn't just a good teacher — He had the power of God because He IS God's Son. As John 3:16 tells us, "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son."
To teach us to trust Him: Every miracle is an invitation to trust Jesus with our lives. If He can calm a storm, He can calm our fears. If He can heal the sick, He can take care of us. If He has power over death, we don't need to be afraid of anything!

Family Activity
Miracle Charades! Write down several miracles of Jesus on slips of paper (calming the storm, healing the blind man, walking on water, feeding 5,000, turning water to wine, raising Lazarus). Take turns acting them out while the rest of the family guesses which miracle it is. After each one, read the Bible passage together and talk about what it teaches us.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many miracles did Jesus perform?
The Gospels record about 37 specific miracles that Jesus performed, but John tells us that Jesus did many, many more that were never written down. John 21:25 says that if everything Jesus did were written, "even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written."
What was Jesus' first miracle?
Jesus' first miracle was at a wedding in a town called Cana. The hosts ran out of wine, and Jesus turned water into wine. His mother Mary had told the servants, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" (John 2:5). This miracle showed His disciples His glory, and they believed in Him.
Can Jesus still do miracles today?
Yes! The Bible teaches that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). While we may not see the exact same kinds of miracles described in the Bible, God still works in powerful and amazing ways in people's lives today through answered prayers, changed hearts, and His daily provision.
Why didn't Jesus do miracles for everyone?
Jesus performed miracles to show God's love, to help people in need, and to prove that He truly was the Son of God. He did not do miracles just to show off or entertain people. In some places, like His hometown of Nazareth, people did not believe in Him, and the Bible says He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief (Matthew 13:58).
What is the greatest miracle Jesus ever did?
The greatest miracle is the resurrection — when Jesus rose from the dead three days after being crucified. This miracle proves that Jesus has power over death itself and that everything He taught is true. Because He rose, we can have the hope of eternal life!
