This is my own personal rendering or paraphrase of (and commentary on) the Tanakh and Apostolic Writings. It should not be considered in any way authoritative. It is based on The World English Bible: Messianic Edition, also known as the Hebrew Names Version, which is in the Public Domain.

My short comments on the text are notated in “maroon pop-up text tips” which are accessed by “hovering” your mouse over the text. [Some short comments look like this.] Longer comments are included in footnotes. I have added emphasis to some phrases simply to call them to your attention.

Under Construction
While this page is under construction, it is extremely difficult to keep the footnotes sequential, as I review the text numerous times, adding new ideas and notes on almost every pass. When I have finished adding all the notes and comments then I intend to add, I will go back and make the footnotes orderly.

God's Charge to Y'hoshua

1After the death of Moshe the servant of ADONAI, ADONAI said to Y'hoshua Ben-Nun, Moshe's assistant, 2Moshe my servant is dead. So now get up and cross over the Yarden, you and all the people, to the land which I am giving to them, the people of Yisra'el. 3I have given you every place that you step on with the sole of your foot, just as I told Moshe. 4Everything from this L'vanon wilderness all the way to the great river, the Euphrates River, all the land of the Hitti, and to the Great Sea (Mediterranian) in the west will be your territory. 5No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. Just as I was with Moshe, I will be with you the same way; I will never fail nor forsake you. 6Be strong and courageous; for you will cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to give their fathers. 7Only be strong and very courageous, to both observe to follow all the Torah that Moshe my servant commanded you: don't deviate from it either to the right or to the left, so you may succeed wherever you go. 8This book of the Torah shall be always on your lips, and you shall meditate on it day and night, so you may be careful to do everything that is written in it: for then you will be prosperous in all you do, and you will have good success. 9Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous; don't be afraid or discouraged, because ADONAI your God is with you wherever you go.

Y'hoshua Assumes Command

10Then Y'hoshua commanded the officers of the people, 11“Go throughout all the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, because within three days you are going to cross over the Yarden to go in and take possession of the land which ADONAI your God has given you as your possession.’” 12To the Re'uveni, the Gadi, and the half-tribe of Menashsheh, Y'hoshua said, 13“Remember what Moshe the servant of ADONAI commanded you: ‘ADONAI your God has given you rest, and will give you this land. 14Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle shall live in the land that Moshe gave you east of the Yarden; but you are to cross over ahead of your brothers as a a mighty armed force, to help them, 15until ADONAI has given your brothers rest, as [he has given] you, and they, too, have taken possession of the land which ADONAI your God has given them. Then you will return to the your own land and take possession of it, the land that Moshe the servant of ADONAI gave you on the east side of the Yarden.” 16They answered Y'hoshua, “We will do all you have commanded, and we will go wherever you send. 17Just as we listened to Moshe in everything, so will we also listen to you. Only may ADONAI your God be with you, as he was with Moshe. 18Whoever rebels against your orders and doesn’t listen to your commands shall be put to death. Just be strong and of courageous!”
