Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

 1 ついに全世界が完成しました。
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 2 すべてを創造し終えると、神は七日目には休まれ、
Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Adam and Eve

 3 この日を祝福して、聖なる日と定めました。この日、天地創造の働きが完了したからです。

人間の創造
This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

 4 主（イスラエルの神の名）なる神が世界を創造された時の模様は、次のとおりです。
Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 5 初めのうち、地には穀物はおろか、一本の植物さえも生えていませんでした。神がまだ地に雨を降らせず、土地を耕す人もいなかったからです。
but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 6 しかし、あちこちから泉がわき出て、全地を潤していました。
Then the Lord God formed a man[c] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

 7 やがて、主なる神が人を造る時がきました。まず、地のちりで体を造り上げ、それにいのちの息を吹き込んだのです。そこで人は、生きた人格を持つ者となりました。
Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 8 それから神は、東の方のエデンに園をつくり、そこに人を住まわせました。
The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

 9 園には、あらゆる種類の美しい木が植えられています。どれも、極上の実をつける木ばかりでした。園の中央には、「いのちの木」と、善悪を判断する知恵のつく「良心の木」とがありました。
A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 10 さて、エデンの地からは一つの川が流れ出て園を潤し、それはやがて四つの流れに分かれていきます。 11-12 その一つピション川は、ハビラ地方全域を蛇行していました。その地方からは、純度の高い金と美しいブドラフ（香りの良い樹脂を出す木）や、しまめのうが取れます。
The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 11 —
(The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[d] and onyx are also there.) 12 —
The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[e] 13 第二の川はギホンと呼ばれ、クシュの全域を流れる川です。
The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

 14 第三がティグリス川で、アシュルの町の東側を流れていました。そして第四がユーフラテス川です。
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 15 神は、人をエデンの園の番人にし、その管理を任せました。 16-17 ただし、一つだけきびしい注意がありました。「園の果物はどれでも食べてよい。だが、『良心の木』の実だけは絶対に食べてはいけない。それを食べると、正しいことと間違ったこと、良いことと悪いことについて、自分勝手な判断を下すようになるからだ。それを食べたら、あなたは必ず死ぬ。」
And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 16 —
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

 17 —
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

 18 また、神はこう考えました。「人が一人でいるのはよくない。彼を助ける者がいなくては。」 19-20 そこで神は、土からあらゆる種類の動物と鳥を造り、アダムのところへ連れて来て、名前をつけさせました。それぞれみな、アダムがつけたとおりの名前をもらいましたが、アダムの助けになるようなものは見当たりませんでした。
Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 19 —
So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[f] no suitable helper was found.

20 —
So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 21 それで神はアダムをぐっすり眠らせ、彼の体から肋骨を一本取り出し、そのあとをふさぐと、
Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

 22 その骨で女を造り、彼のところへ連れて来ました。
The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
    for she was taken out of man.”

 23 「ああ、これはすばらしい！」アダムは思わず叫びました。「私の骨と私の肉から造られた、まさに私の一部です。そうだ、『男』から造ったのだから、『女』と呼ぶことにします。」
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

 24 人が両親のもとを離れて妻と結ばれ、二人が一体となるのはこうした背景があるのです。
Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

 25 この時、まだ二人とも裸でしたが、恥ずかしいとは思いませんでした。
