The Great Religions of the World

In order to effectively share the Gospel of Yeshua HaMashiach with a non-believer it is always a good idea to have at least some idea of what that person already believes. Remember that when Rav Sha'ul addressed the people in Athens (Acts 17:16-34) he began his message to them by mentioning that they had in their city an alter to “an unknown G-d.” From that point he was able to tell them that the G-d that they considered “unknown” was the only true G-d. He started from a point in their own belief system and from there was able to share the Gospel with them.

King Solomon once said, “There is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Virtually all of the cults that the Bible-believer will encounter are either based on old heresies that have been dusted off and given a fresh coat of paint to make them look new, or they are simply a Westernized version of one or more of the religions of man.

This section provides a brief summary of the core teachings of many of the world religions and the cults that are derived from them.

Most of the documents in this section of our site are compiled from a series of lectures on the cults and world religions delivered by Prof. Rickard L. Sawyer, ThM, ThD, DMin (Ari Levitt) and Prof. Grady L. Davis, BD, MCM, PhD in the Department of Comparative Religion on the Alameda, California, campus of Golden Gate School of Theology from 1983 to 1985, and in numerous churches in California and Tennessee from 1980 to 1995. Some minor editorial changes have been made to present a more Messianic Jewish viewpoint than that of the original Baptist-oriented presentation.

The United States Navy Chaplain Corps maintains a website with additional information about several different religious groups at: http://www.chaplaincare.navy.mil/index.htm.
