Dancing for Joy
By: Murray Silberling |

 |
|
Worship occurs in many ways. Some people
worship G-d through good works. Others worship the Lord through prayer. Many
worship the Almighty through singing songs of praise. But more and more
people are worshipping G-d through dance. In Dancing for Joy, Silberling, one
of the world's foremost experts on worship dance, uncovers fascinating facts
about this biblical form of worship. This "Dancing Rabbi," as he is
affectionately known in Messianic Jewish circles, brings years of experience
in worship dance and teaching worship dance to this book. He offers
encouragement to the klutz - the clumsy person - who doesn't think dancing is
for him. He also confronts the fallacy that dancing is only for women. He
demonstrates how dance has been used through the ages as a way to worship
G-d.

What You Don't Know May Be Killing You
By:
Don Colbert, M.D. |

 |
|
You know that proper diet,
exercise and rest can keep you in good health. But you're not sure you're
doing enough. You've seen family or friends devastated by illness- even those
who cared for their health. Could they have done more to prevent disease?
What they did probably helped. But there's more to creating and sustaining
good health than you may know. In fact... What You Don't Know May Be Killing
You. As a well-trained physician, Dr. Don Colbert believed that he understood
the basics for good health until his own health began to fail him. When his
own profession was unable to give him answers or help, he turned to other
health-related disciplines. The answers he found surprised him, and they may
surprise you! In this informative book, you'll learn about what's slowly
killing you in: What you eat What you drink What you breathe What you think
What you wear What's inside your house What supplements you take What
medications and dentistry leave in you You've known about and done the basics
for years. Now it's time to learn what you don't know and do the things that
can mean life and health to you for years to come!

Alternative Medicine: The Christian Handbook — A Critical Review
by Dr. Rickard L. Sawyer, Th.M, Th.D., D.Min., M.B.A., C.N.H.P.,
N.D.cand.Although I have
no doubts about either their sincerity or their competence within the scope
of their own professions, I simply don’t believe that Drs. O’Mathuna and
Larimore have done their homework on the subject of alternative medicine, and
I have some serious doubts regarding their qualification to have written this
book. The biographical information on the back cover of the book says that
Dr. O’Mathuna “has his doctorate in medicinal chemistry (scientifically
studying herbal remedies).” I have no knowledge of his specific training or
experience; however, in general, the field of medicinal chemistry usually
studies only isolated extracted components of plants and rarely, if ever,
studies the effectiveness of the whole plant, or even the effectiveness of
the parts of the plant that are traditionally used in herbalism.
The book provides no information about the authors that would indicate that
either of them has any background or training in either natural medicine or
Biblical theology, yet they claim to be experts in both fields.
The authors apparently attempt to
create serious concern in the mind of the reader that most forms of natural
health education is either unsafe or unfit for Bible Believers. Many of the
claims they make against natural medicine in this book are simply ridiculous.
For example, they “cite” an occasion in which a person allegedly became
“demon possessed” by simply visiting a natural health practitioner who did
nothing more than examine the the iris of the client’s eye and recommend some
treatments (p. 74). Yet they openly ridicule and flatly reject all “anecdotal
accounts” of individuals whose lives have been saved, or who have been
greatly helped by natural health education and techniques.
The Christian Medical and Dental Association,
which is the co-producer of this book along with Zondervan Publishing, is
currently promoting this book through a series of radio ads which claim that
the book is “Medically Accurate and Biblically Sound.” The unfortunate truth
of the matter is that the book is neither medically accurate nor biblically
sound. It is only a thinly-veiled “witch hunt” aimed at directly at
discrediting those competent and dedicated natural health professionals who
offer a safe alternative to the American Medical Association (A.M.A.) whose
medical malpractice, by their own statistics (published in U.S. News Online
on 4/27/98), is the
fourth leading cause of death in the United States. The death rate to
medical malpractice is approximately equivalent in scale to a fully-loaded
Boeing 747 crashing every single day, and (again, according to the A.M.A.’s
own statistics)
the “average” physician will kill two patients through malpractice during the
course of his/her career. Any other company or profession with that
terrible a safety record would simply be forced out of business. And it is
questionable whether an organization with that kind of safety record is
qualified to judge the safety record of natural health professionals who have
a near-perfect safety record.
While it is quite true that
there are some “natural health” practices that are “New Age” and/or occult in
nature, and that these should be carefully avoided by a child of G-d, the
authors would have their audience “throw the baby out with the bath water”
and avoid virtually all forms of natural health practice that are not
specifically endorsed by (and therefore, in business “compteition” with) the
A.M.A.
They also make several blatantly
false accusations and claims against some forms of natural medicine. For
example, on page 236, they say, “Iridologists claim to be able to diagnose
the existence of a wide variety of diseases in the organs of the body.” This
statement is not true. The truth is that all reputable iridologists
will tell you that iridology does not diagnose disease. Bernard
Jensen, D.C., Ph.D., is considered “the father of American Iridology.” He
writes, “Iridology does not name diseases; instead, it reads tissue
condition.” [Iridology Simplified, p. 9; repeated on p. 37; his
emphasis.]
As natural health professionals,
my wife and I are affiliated with two separate organizations that included
literally thousands of born-again Bible-believing Christians who, on a daily
basis, provide medically safe and Biblically sound natural health services to
tens, or perhaps even hundreds, of thousands of people who are either not
satisfied with the care they are being provided by their medical doctor, or
they have determined that they wish to take charge of and be actively
involved in their own health maintenance.
Let the reader decide whether or
not I am qualified to write such a critical review.
I worked in “traditional” (allopathic)
medicine for about 14 years. Although I am not a physician, I have been
trained and certified as a technician in electrocardiography,
electroencephalography, and neuro-psychiatric technique, and have also worked
as an emergency room supervisor, nursing instructor, operating room
technician, and x-ray technician. I have also served as a health research
consultant to the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Blindness
(part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health) and to the Government of
Guam’s Department of Health (including Project Head Start and Guam Memorial
Hospital).
I am a seminary-trained (Th.M.
[Master of Theology], Th.D. [Doctor of Theology], and D.Min. [Doctor of
Ministry]) theologian and Evangelical Christian (now Messianic Jewish)
pastor/teacher with over 30 years of pastoral ministry experience. I taught
graduate-level Theology (masters and doctoral programs) in a west-coast
seminary and also served as that school’s Academic Dean. In addition to my
seminary training, I am currently a Certified Natural Health Professional, and I
am currently studying toward a Naturopathic Doctor degree from a
Christian college of natural health. Over the past six years I have
attended well over five hundred hours of classroom instruction and seminars
in numerous areas of Natural Health, including nutrition, herbalism (Western,
Chinese, and Ayurvedic), iridology, kinesiology, bodywork, electromagnetic
therapy, cranial alignment therapy, muscle-response testing (M.R.T.), Contact
Reflex Analysis (C.R.A.), acupressure, body reflexology, aromatherapy,
bioenergetic analysis, and others (for definitions of these terms,
click here). And I have only just begun the studies that are required to
become truly competent as a Natural Health Care Provider.
By contrast, throughout the
course of their entire professional training, most medical doctors (M.D.’s)
have only a single semester of nutritional training (only about 50 hours of
total classroom time) and absolutely no exposure at all to the
so-called “natural,” “alternative,” or non-allopathic treatments that
Chiropractors (D.C.’s), Osteopaths (D.O.’s), and Naturopath’s (N.D.’s)
practice. (Allopathic medicine is the form of medicine practiced by M.D.
members of the A.M.A.)
Let the reader understand that I
am not anti-physician. What I am against is that most allopathic
physicians would have the public believe that they, and they alone, somehow
have the only answers to good health, and that they should be blindly
followed because they have “M.D.” after their names. I am against the idea
that “Truth” should be rejected just because it was not dispensed by an M.D.
And I am against the idea that G-d’s children should commit the kind of
idolatry that has led a great number of physicians to view themselves as
deity to be blindly followed by those to whom G-d has given minds that are
capable of accumulating information and the indwelling Holy Spirit to help
them use that information wisely. I am particularly opposed to those who
promote this kind of idolatry under the guise of providing “Biblically Sound”
information.
There are a large number of very
good, “Medically Accurate and Biblically Sound” books about Natural Health
that are available. This just does not happen to be one of them. For more
“Medically Accurate and Biblically Sound” information about Natural Health,
please visit this ministry’s Natural Health website at www.theherbdoc.com.
